Half Steps and Whole Steps

Just some clarification on terminology...



Half step = semitone

Whole step = tone


For our purposes, we'll stick to half and whole steps.


On the keyboard/fretboards below, a half step would be moving one key/fret in either direction from the starting note. A whole step would be moving two keys/frets in either direction from the starting note.


Practice

Using the keyboard/fretboard maps below, answer the following questions. Answers will be at the bottom of the page.


  1. If you are on F and you move up a half step, what note are you on?
  2. If you are on C and you move down a half step, what note are you on?
  3. if you are on E♭ and you move up a whole step, what note are you on?
  4. If you are on G♯ and you move down a whole step, what note are you on?
